I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Today I’m going to be reviewing Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, based on my experiences with Pokémon Violet. As a quick disclaimer, there are a few minor spoilers in this article. You’ve been warned. With that out of the way, let’s dive into the world of Pokémon.
The game is set in the new Paldea Region and is completely open world. Though the world can feel a little empty at times, I enjoy exploring it. It is especially fun to explore the world with friends online, and to find the little details incorporated into the world. It’s also really nice to watch the Pokémon wandering around the fields. I’m really glad they got rid of the grass from the previous games where Pokémon would attack you out of nowhere. It was really annoying. There are also plenty of towns to visit and Pokémon centers scattered throughout the land.
Not only is the world open, but the story is a lot less linear. Prior Pokémon games had been quite linear up until recently. You’d have to play the gyms in a specific order, and you’d have to win specific battles before you could move on. There’s still some of that, but it’s a lot less limiting of your gameplay, and you can play gyms and make progress on other parts of the game in any order you’d like. Though I don’t think games have to be open world and non-linear to be good, I honestly really like the freedom of playing the game in any order you’d like. Of course, the game brings the different paths and quests together at the end of the game, creating one coherent story.
I’m not going to go into too much detail about the story—you should play the game yourself—but rest assured, the game has an entertaining story and characters, and it works really well. Towards the end of the game, I should mention, though, there are some plot twists that have to do with time travel, and it is very interesting. Scarlet has to do with the past, and Violet has to do with the future. It was very cool. Again, you should play the game yourself if you want to know more.
With every new generation of Pokémon, comes some sort of crazy new ability with a wacky name for your Pokémon to use in battle. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduced the all new terastallizing. Terastallizing allows the player to temporarily change their Pokémon’s type. At the beginning of the game, you receive a tera orb that you can use to terastallize your Pokémon. The orb discharges after every use though, so you have to recharge it at the Pokémon Center if you want to use it again. Terastallizing can be really useful when you take advantage of the Pokémon type advantages, and personally I think terastallizing is my favorite special ability yet.
A lot of people complained about how the game supposedly has a ton of glitches. I didn’t get the game until my birthday, a few weeks after its release. I think they patched a decent amount of bugs before I got the chance to play the game, and I also don’t really try to look for bugs. In fact, I personally try my best not to glitch the game. I find that a lot of people complain about bugs that you’d only run into if you were trying to find them. I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but the normal player isn’t trying to clip through walls, into objects, and whatever else the people complaining are trying to do. That’s not to say this game is without bugs, it’s far from it. I just think people should not be too harsh about it, because otherwise, the game is really great.

So, in conclusion, I really enjoyed playing Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It has a great story, is fun to play with friends, and is similar enough to the other Pokémon games. Its open world works well, considering it’s the first (and hopefully not the last) fully open world Pokémon game. The game has plenty of details to uncover, and so many cool features I haven’t even mentioned. It has its glitches, but that doesn’t make it an objectively bad game, at least in my mind. I personally love Pokémon, and I think this game is really entertaining, a great addition to the series, and is a step forward in the right direction.
